CLINICAL PRACTICE Effect of the implementation of NICE guidelines for ultrasound guidance on the complication rates associated with central venous catheter placement in patients presenting for routine surgery in a tertiary referral centre

چکیده
Background. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines of 2002 recommended the use of ultrasound (US) for central venous catheterization in order to minimize complications associated with central line placement. An ongoing audit of line placement by anaesthetists in the theatre complex of a tertiary referral centre looked at the associated complication rates. The objective of the study was to compare complication rates preand post-implementation of NICE guidelines.

Should ultrasound guidance be used for central venous catheterisation in the emergency department?
In September 2002, the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) issued guidelines for England and Wales suggesting that ultrasound guidance should be used for all electives, and should be considered for most emergency, central venous catheterisations.1 These guidelines propose a major change of practice for most clinicians practising in UK Emergency Departments. متن کاملComparison Between Open and Ultrasonography Guided Venous Access Ports in Children with Malignancy
Background: Long-term central venous access is used in children for various reasons specially for delivering chemotherapy. Since vessels in children have smaller diameters, they are more prone to injury and complications such as thrombosis. Different methods are used for implantation of port-a-cath in children. We aimed to compare the complications of insertion of central venous access ports be...
متن کاملSkin fold technique for central venous catheter fixation; Comparison with conventional method for postopration infections
Background: Central Venous Catheters (CVCs) are used not only as a tool to access to central venous system, but also for hemodynamic monitoring, parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy and hemodialysis. The use of CVCs is associated with some complications notably infections that are troublesome both to patient and physician. We conducted this study to examine catheter fixation with skin fold techni...

متن کاملComparing the early function and complications between fluoroscopic guidance and blindly insertion of permanent hemodialysis catheter
Objective: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a complicated kidney defect causing permanent failure in renal function in progressive stages. Hemodialysis is the most accepted treatment to maintain body’s fluid/electrolyte homeostasis at the terminal stages of the disease. Permanent hemodialysis catheter (permicath) may be inserted blindly or by fluoroscopic guidance. This study aimed to compare th...
